The Biewer breed has been subjected to a myriad of different opinions since arriving in the United States. From these opinions, we have seen changes made to the breed's name, standard, and history making it evident that this breed is still very new and that no one has all of the answers. The history of the breed is not completely known and the future is still a work in progress.

In 2007, it was becoming evident to many that if these beautiful dogs were to stand on their own, the breed name would one day need to be changed. After many discussions with well renowned judges and rare breed specialists throughout 2008, our members voted to drop 'Yorkshire Terrier' from the name, changing the breed name to Biewer a la pom pon. Based on this decision, the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier National Club (BYTNC) decided to change their name to the Biewer a la pom pon Club of America (BAPPC), becoming the club before you today.

The breed history given to us by the country of origin tells us that the Biewer a la pom pon originated from two standard colored Yorkshire Terriers. Unfortunately, there is very little documented proof as to how the breed was developed and no one can know for certain what was done within each individual breeding program. In an effort to determine the make-up of the breed, some are relying on information from the Wisdom Panel MX Mixed-Breed Analysis created by Mars Veterinary. While this course of action was explored by the BAPPC, the experts at Mars Veterinary verified that with their current knowledge and technology, they could not definitively state what (if any) other breeds were used in the creation of the breed other than the Yorkshire Terrier. While we are not opposed to participating in this type of testing, we do not feel that the history / future of the breed should be based on the results unless they are completely accurate. We hope that one day this type of testing will be able to conclusively verify what the Biewer a la pom pon is composed of. Until then, we will continue to follow the history, documented pedigrees, and historical pictures that have been provided to us. More information regarding the documented history, the current claims, and our beliefs regarding this information can be found on our history page.

This wonderful dog has made its way into the hearts and homes of many American families and several are now working as service dogs. The BAPPC feels that this breed should continue as a toy/companion breed and will breed for this purpose. With the serious commitment and dedication of our members, we will continue to do what we feel is best for the Biewer a la pom pon and focus on the long-term future of the breed.
